There is nothing worse than spending hard earned money for a gym membership and never using it. There are a host of reasons this happens to people. Sometimes we have less time in our day then we intended, or the membership is for full gym access when all we wanted is to be more active. Even factors like chronic pain and reliable transportation can make a gym membership useless.
A treadmill desk is a workstation/treadmill hybrid that allows you to become constantly active while working all day at what would normally be a sit-down job. The idea is to turn your idle hours at work and home into vital hours of caloric expenditure. The increase of activity over time is enough to kick the metabolism into constant high gear and burn more fat.
At a gym you have one shot each trip to use a piece of cardio equipment. If the gym you use is very busy, the time you have on that equipment can be as short as 20-30 min. Using a treadmill desk at home provides you with all the time you desire to engage in physical activity.
Treadmill desks are relatively cheap to build at home. All you need is to afix a used treadmill to an elevated flat surface, or slide one under a desk that is chest high instead of a chair. This idea is becoming so popular, certain companies are manufacturing desk/treadmill convertable stations. If you are trying to save money however, prefabricated units may be out of the question. Just get inventive at home.
There are other benefits to using one of these units at home constantly. Secondary fitness occurs. If you are exercising your lower body and doing something else with your arms, shoulders and back, you are developing a strong core through balance. Cardio activity requires core contraction to sustain. The more your muscular balance is developed, the more opportunity for fat burning will occur.
Since these units are relatively new innovations, only time and consistent use will tell if they could eventually make going to the gym to trim up obsolete.
Dr. Levine of the Mayo Clinic is the pioneer who came up with the concept of the Treadmill Desk. His purpose was to help lower the crippling costs that healthcare has had on American businesses. With obesity being so prevalent, Dr. Levine’s simple but highly effective solution is just the cure that American businesses need to help lower their healthcare costs. Here is a video of Dr. Levine speaking about his amazing concept:
Check out this video clip from 20/20 where a lady used a simple table leaf across the arms of her treadmill to make a fantastic Walking Desk! It’s quite the motivation as she shows her before and after pictures.
These types of stories are great, and hopefully will encourage you like it has for me to get on a walking desk. As you can see from the video it can be cheap and easy to get started! When you are ready to take it to your office or use it full time you can upgrade to a Trek Desk or another more sturdy work surface for your walking desk.
Regular and long hours of exercise are the only way to achieve your fitness goals faster and gain effective health-related results. For all the ‘busy bees’ who get little time to spend on fitness due to their busy daily schedule getting this exercise can be a major challenge. So, a treadmill desk or a walking desk is the most convenient option by which you can gain fitness without hampering your professional life. In fact, it is one of the best ways to control obesity among office workers whose work involves sitting for hours in front of computers.
A walking desk can be beneficial as you can simultaneously perform your chores or does your office work at the desk, while also walking slowly on the moving conveyer belt of the treadmill. The aim of a walking desk is to include some body movements to your otherwise stagnant routine day-to-day office work. Without sitting the whole day on a chair, you can take slow walks on the treadmill while working on its desk. Just by walking slowly on the conveyer belt you can burn about 100-150 calories per hour. This helps in treating obesity and increasing your fitness.
Working on a walking desk is beneficial in a number of ways. It is an effective way to burn the extra calories you’ve accumulated along your waistline. It improves blood circulation and makes your mind more active thus increasing your productivity.
It also promotes weight loss and maintains your cholesterol levels i.e. decreases detrimental LDL cholesterol and increases useful HDL cholesterol. Treadmill desks help immensely in cases of Type II diabetes and prevention of osteoporosis, heart disease and stroke. It even increases your lung capacity.
Treadmill desks prevent inflammation due to arthritis or osteoarthritis. It is beneficial for eliminating the risk of fatal diseases like colon cancer, breast cancer and also dementia and Alzheimer. The benefits of using a treadmill are plenty. It triggers at over-all improvement of your health thus increasing your energy levels. This helps in increasing your concentration levels and productivity and makes your professional life smooth and easy. It increases libido which enhances your sex-life.
The above benefits regarding treadmill desks may seem to be too good to be true but, this is an exercise machine backed by years of research. There are so many diseases with so many pharmaceutical cures (with the side effects) but, we forget the most inexpensive way to cure ailments i.e. walking. Now-a-days it is quite difficult to save few hours for your health due to the work load at your workplace. So, needless to say that a treadmill desk will prove itself to be worthy of the money you spend on buying it.
Walking desks can costs less than a single month’s insurance premium and offer you the benefits which such insurance premiums could hardly offer. Medical insurance is something very important but, taking care of your health and providing your body with all its necessities is the best insurance of all ; it is an insurance for the present and as well as your future.
So now is the time to act! Don’t neglect your health or fitness for your work when you can do it both simultaneously with the help of the walking desk.
Are you thinking about purchasing a new mini Treadmill Desk or a full sized one but worried about the space a treadmill consumes? Opting for a spacesaver treadmill or a folding treadmill is beneficial as they are fabulous space savers. When they are not in use, you can fold them up in an easy and hazard-free procedure. These machines are nice looking and, when folded, can fit easily into every nook and corner of your room. Small wheels are also present at the base which helps you to move them easily from one place to another.
A spacesaver treadmill is a perfect option if you are living in a flat or apartment with limited space. In this way, you can own a large exercise machine but after usage, you can store it in a comparatively small space. With a mini treadmill desk attached, you can either remove it temporarily when it is in the upright position, or in the case of mine, I can keep it on even the treadmill is in spacesaver mode, saving time when I am ready to work on homework again.
A treadmill is prone to attract dirt and dust and if you don’t keep it clean then with time it will affect its efficiency. On the other hand, a folding treadmill is much easy to clean and thus proper maintenance gives you increased efficiency.
It is a common belief that spacesaver treadmills are of inferior quality when compared to fixed treadmills. This is a completely wrong concept as additional strengthening mechanisms are added to the design of such folding treadmills to make the whole thing more durable and long-lasting.
If you are ready to boost your working productivity and lose weight while multi-tasking on your work then, using a treadmill with a treadmill desk attached will help you to work without leaving your room and the energy consumption is the same as normal walking. So, your daily workout routines can be incorporated into your daily working or homework time.
The surfaces of folding treadmills are cushioned which decreases the strain on your joints to a great extent. They are favorable for people having knee or back problems and also those who are intense runners.
Things to be taken under consideration before buying spacesaver treadmills -
Check out whether the motor used for moving the conveyer belt is powerful; such motors work efficiently without creating much noise.
Check the breadth of the conveyer belt as greater width lessens your chances of tripping up thus making your workout more comfortable.
Manual or electronic regulation helps you to alter the load by decreasing or increasing the inclination of the treadmill.
Spacesaver treadmills are available in the market in varied sizes and shapes. A number of features are also included now-a-days like i-Fit exercise programs, 7 inch LCD television, MP3players etc. So, buy one today with a mini treadmill desk to make your working experience more enjoyable and, stay fit to look good.
One of the easiest ways to get started with treadmill desks is with a SurfShelf. It is made of tough plastic, and is designed to fit on any treadmill. I received mine from Amazon less than three days after I ordered it. It has been fantastic! It is made of high quality clear plastic with multiple adjustments for various treadmills and other exercise equipment such as an exercise bike or elliptical.
The instructions that are provided with the SurfShelf mini treadmill desk show how to use it with any standard exercise machine. It comes with two long straps that can be used if necessary to connect it to your device. It also comes with a Velcro strap that will hold your laptop in place wherever it is situated. I have never seen such a flexible desk. It can be used for a laptop or for reading a book while on your treadmill or other exercise machine. It is extremely sturdy as well. I have a desktop replacement laptop made by Dell that is on the heavy side. It fits extremely well and could easily accommodate a much larger laptop if necessary. The SurfShelf Mini Treadmill Desk is the easiest way to try out a treadmill Desk before upgrading to a full sized office treadmill desk. It is a very inexpensive piece of equipment that will work with virtually any exercise equipment. I’ve tried it at the gym and at home. It works extremely well! For less than $40.00 how can you possibly go wrong? You can use it as a reading shelf, laptop shelf, or for writing while using your treadmill. The Surfshelf mini treadmill desk is a very innovative and versatile office treadmill desk or also for home use. I can’t say enough good things about the SurfShelf. The pictures used on the post are of my SurfShelf device, not a picture from Amazon or elsewhere.
Some of the pricier treadmill desks especially from a company like Steelcase can be upwards of $2,000 and much more depending on the options. Do you want to try a treadmill desk without all the expense? There is a pretty simple solution in the video below. Take a treadmill, place a board on top of the handrails. And Voila! Of course it probably isn’t the best long term solution, so you may wish to upgrade to the Trek Desk which is a very moderately priced high quality Treadmill Desk.
I know it sounds surprising, but you can do everything you can do on your regular desk while walking on your treadmill and working with a treadmill desk. You can type an e-mail, surf the web without issue, and even make phone calls.
The key is to walk slowly enough, somewhere in the range of .7-1.5 miles per hour. Walking at these speeds will not cause you to break a sweat, or cause your breathing to become heavier. If you are in your home office though and are just surfing the web you can bump up the speed to a modest pace in the 3mph and still be able to surf the web effectively depending on your physical ability etc… Use the fine tuning speed adjustment to find the optimal speed for the type of work you are doing. In an office setting, I wouldn’t bump up the speed beyond the more modest .7-1.8 mph range because you don’t want to be sweaty when co-workers come around.
Absolutely! I do it all the time, and no-one even knows I’m on the phone. I’ve asked several people, and they were shocked when I told them I was walking on a treadmill. Phones are good at ignoring the small amount of white noise that a treadmill makes when you are walking, so people on the other end will not hear that noise.
Can you type a letter or do other data processing tasks while working at a treadmill desk?
Again Absolutely! You can do anything you can at a normal desk. If you find that typing is a bit more difficult just slow down the speed. Also try not to concentrate on your feet movement, and before long you won’t even realize you are walking and working at the same time. You can program computer code, write business letters, and absolutely anything else you can do sitting at a traditional desk.
There is lots of variety in the treadmill desk products. You can buy one with cupholders, and a generous workspace, or you can get a simple SurfShelf that you can sit your laptop on top of. Either way, it comes down to the features you are looking for in a workspace.
If you don’t believe what you can do on a treadmill take a book with you to a gym that offers a free trial and try it. Just walk slowly and see that you can read a book without a problem. If you can do that you can also read off of a laptop or desktop monitor right? I challenge you to give a treadmill desk a try. I love mine enough to make a website all about it.
Using a treadmill desk is not just about the potential weight loss that can be achieved. While it is true that using the treadmill at a slow pace over a sustained period of time will help you shed calories this is not the only benefit that can be achieved by diligent use of your treadmill. Here are some other benefits that walking helps promote:
A Healthy Brain
Have you heard the phrase that walking can clear your head? Well it is true, according to the Franklin Institute, walking increases the blood flow and oxygen to the brain. This extra oxygen allows for more energy production and waste removal.
Several studies especially amongst the elderly population shows that walking increases memory function. Why not get started earlier and help prevent memory loss by walking throughout your life.
Brandon Alderman, a researcher at Rutgers University, has been researching walking on a treadmill desk and its effects on productivity. According to Alderman, “We’re learning that people perform better when given the opportunity to stand and move around while they’re at work… So from a productivity standpoint, it might be best if they’re also moving while they’re working.” Additional research is being conducted at other research universities including the University of California San Diego to determine the productivity benefits of Treadmill Desks.
Walking is something that humans are very good at. In the past it was one of our primary methods of transportation. Walking is easy on the body, and provides a very low-impact workout that almost everyone can enjoy to help improve their health and well-being. Of course it is always good to consult a doctor if you are going to start any new exercise if you are afflicted by heart disease or any other condition that has prevented you from performing other workouts.
Walking along with other exercise helps relieve stress. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, “Exercise is an effective distraction from stressful events.” and “Exercise may directly blunt the harmful effects of stress on blood pressure and the heart (exercise protects the heart in any case).” Adding exercise to your life can help you have a better feeling of well-being.
With all of these health benefits from walking, and other exercise why not include it into your daily time at work? You can improve your health and productivity and get all these great benefits on top of it. I have been using my treadmill desk for several months now, and I absolutely love how I can work and get my exercise at the same time! I strongly recommend everyone who doesn’t have time for exercise try out the concept. You can stick a board across the arms of an existing treadmill you have, or go to a friends house and try it out. I think you will be amazed at how productive you feel and how easy it is to burn those calories with walking just at a slow pace. Once you try it out and decide it is for you, you should pick out a more stable and wonderful treadmill desk such as the Trek Desk Shown Below:
There are a lot of different models of treadmills out there, but which type of model is best for your treadmill desk? Should you get an incline model with lots of fancy workout programs? What about one with a 3.0 HP motor? Do you want whisper quiet models or a cheapie model from Wal-Mart? Here are some things I’ve found with my various treadmill desk setups:
- You want quiet if you are in an office environment. Before buying a treadmill go to a fitness store that sells different models and listen to the noise being produced by the various models you are considering. You want one that is quiet so you don’t distract your co-workers. However with that in mind, treadmill noise is kind of like white noise like a fan. Human ears can easily adapt to ignore the noise that comes from a treadmill. I have asked many people while on the phone at my treadmill desk if they could hear the treadmill and not one has known I was on a treadmill when talking to them. I recommend a whisper-quiet model though just to eliminate any possibility of annoyance from your co-workers.
- Get a model with a good motor. The less strain on the motor the longer the treadmill is going to last. It comes down to your budget; buy the one with the best motor and warranty in the class of treadmill you can afford.
- Measure the size of your workspace. You don’t really need a large running deck if you are working in an office environment. If you are using it in your home office or dorm for working on homework then you can get one that you will also do a good running workout on. In which case, a long running deck is preferred.
- Check Dimensions. All of the desks I’ve worked with provide ample space and adjustment to work with any treadmill, however before ordering a treadmill desk like the trek-desk make sure the dimensions work with your treadmill. With a simple shelf based desk like the SurfShelf it will work with virtually any treadmill, elliptical or exercise bike.
- Speed adjustments. You want to make sure the treadmill you purchase allows for small incremental increases in speed. Hal-mile an hour adjustments are a bit much. It is better to get one that allows you to adjust in .1 mile increments. The optimal working speed is enough to not get you tired and allow you to walk all day. That range is in the .7 – 1.3 mph range. Granular speed controls will allow you to get to the target speed that works for you.
- Treadmills do occasionally break-down so get the best deck, motor, belt, and control panel warranty you can get. You will be putting a lot of miles on your treadmill if you use it with a treadmill desk. An extended warranty is not a bad idea. You should also buy a model where there is a local dealer that can service your treadmill so it is not out for the count for long if a problem arises.
